Happy 2012!

A very happy new year! It's taken me a few weeks to get into the swing of things but now classes have started (enrolment through ACRES) I feel energised and ready to take on the new year.
Not long now until 'JAM WITH HOSSAM' in East Grinstead on the 31st. I always enjoy the jam sessions and any opportunity to rock out with Hossam- I'm there! I mean, I'd have to be crazy not to attend something like that right on my doorstep, hosted by THE leading authority on Egyptian Music and Rhythms.

Another date for the diary is the 7th of April when the lovely Lianna 'chicky' Green will be hosting 'Eyptian Nights III' - an evening of dance and music at the intriguing St Mary in the castle, Hastings and tickets are available from Lianna's website at www.zaphirauk.co.uk. A show well worth attending even if only to see Lianna herself, let alone her fabulous troupe and many many others. I'll be performing at the show and am thinking about choreographing something new but what? .... decisions, decisions!

It's been a busy month! First up was the East Grinstead Hafla, organised by Hipsinc's Lea, were I received a generous and warm welcome from all the dancers. Next was the Crowborough girls do - their 'Halfa Hafla' as they coined it! I had such a great time and got the chance to air the latest of Serena's choregraphies which I really enjoyed dancing, (probably my favourite performance after DQN!?) Then last weekend saw the Ramzy Dance Company in Derby for a couple of our troupe routines. A long old drive, (made short with the excellent company of Lianna!) but as ever, a pleasure to dance with the girls and then get to watch Hossam and Serena spin their magic! One of highlight of the evening has to be jamming with the gang and Hossam- made me laugh!
December sees a couple more gigs to end the year. First up on the 3rd is the Ses Gypsies show with special guest Shafeek. After a years absence, I'm looking forward to what will undoubtedly be another razzle dazzle spectacular from the Sea Gypsy troupe.
The Following weekend on the 10th in Mountfield sees Romys Christmas Hafla organised by my original belly dance teacher, Joyce. I'll be teaching a special Christmas choreography to kick the evening off- all very exciting!
The next day on the 11th I swap roles and will be the student at Helia's Persian dance workshop at The Dance Attic Studio in Fulham. Really looking forward to learning a new dance form and being inspired by the lovely Helia Badeh.
Only one thing bothers me- when am I gonna get the xmas shoping done!?

Club Cleopatra

Club Cleopatra, hosted and organised by my fellow RDC performer Helen Aislie, was created as a way for students to share and show their efforts and choreographies in a supportive and friendly atmosphere. Fortunately, last Saturday the Club Cleopatra attendees extended the hospitality to me as their guest artist.
I felt very honoured and welcomed by the Reading dancers and was extremely impressed by their level of skill and creativity as they performed throughout the evening. Made me kinda nervous that I would have to follow the standard set so early on in the evening!
As a result, I managed to knock over a drink just as I was being introduced- not an ideal way to make a lasting impression? However, the first dance I performed seemed to go down well and I enjoyed the enthusiam of the audience.
By my second dance, I still hadn't quite shaken off the clumsiness and began just as awkardly, knocking over a chair this time! Can't imagine what they must of thought?! However, this made me more determined to end on a good note and put in a performance I hoped would cancel any poor impressions of me!
I'm sure the Reading ladies had no negative thoughts as they all seemed lovely and I even managed to get some postive compliments into the bargain!
Despite my clumsiness, Helen has kindly invited me to return and dance on another occaision. I'm looking forward to it already!
Next up is a performance at the Chequer Mead Hafla in East Grinstead, hosted by Lea Smith of Hipsinc on the 10th of November. It will be great to meet new folk and support the community in my local area- I will just make sure I stay well clear of any moveable objects!

Next Saturday I'll be winging my way up to Reading to perform at fellow RDC principal and friend, the beautiful Helen Ansile's 'Club Cleopatra'!
I'm really looking forward to it and feel very honoured to be asked along. I just hope I do Helen proud and entertain the Reading gang- (I know what high standards of dance the Reading dancers have and the top class artists they have as teachers!)
I've chosen an upbeat and then a fusion piece- hopefully something a bit different in terms of music- but will just try and be me, whatever that is!??
So between now and next Saturday, upping the practises, trying out the costumes and programming the satnav!

If you didn't book a ticket For the 'Dance Queens of the Nile' at the Chequer Mead Theatre last night- you missed out a absolute treat of a show!
Last night's show was one of the best I've done both with and without the Ramzy Dance Company. The venue was homely and filled with a brilliantly supportive and appreciative audience who were absolutely buzzing about the music, the dancing, the choreographies, the costume and the whole shebang!
Of course, there are always tiny things that could be tightened and improved and certainly, myself and the RDC girls are very self critical when it comes to our dancing, but I felt it was near spot on as a whole show. We had in addition to our regular company members, a troupe from Portugal lead by the extremely talented Judite Dilshad- such a lovely group of girls who danced a really cool choreography of 'Sett in Stone' from Hossam's 'Egypt Unveiled' album.
So now I am enjoying a well needed rest and relaxing on a perfectly sunny Sunday afternoon!
Next up is Essex where I will be dancing during the evening concert on the 16th of July (book at www.hossamramzy.com) and Hossam and Serena's East Grinstead Workshop on the 6th of August at the Chequer Mead (book via www.chequermead.org.uk) - I will see you there!

The countdown begins....

Just 2 weeks now until the big show on the 25th of June at the Chequer Mead Theatre in East Grinstead! We're all working really hard at rehearsals both together and in our own time, plus the promotion and preparation for the Dance Queens of the Nile. It's fantastic to have another chance to perform in this amazing show and I now know I'll be performing the duet with Lianna again, which is a real treat.
We really want this to work as we know we have a brilliant show on our hands and would love to share it with others. We've been promoting the show like mad, spreading the good word! Even if you came to watch the show before, this time will be tighter and with even more energy plus, the show has an additional dance number by a guest troupe all the way from Portugal.
We're hoping for a lot of local support- I know this is something quite unique for the good folk of East Grinstead! However, I'm thrilled to say most of my students will be attending and I hope I do them proud on the night.

DQN Show take 2!

Preparations are now fully underway for the upcoming 'Dance Queens of the Nile' show booked for the 25th of June at the Chequer Mead Theatre in East Grinstead. This will be the 2nd outing for our show which debuted at the Bloomsbury Theatre in London back in February. I'm more excited about this one because it's on home ground and hopefully many of my students will be able to watch what I think is an amazing show- we got a fantastic review in the belly dance specialist magazine, 'Mosaic'.
Above is a photo from the Bloomsbury show-the 2nd half of which pays homage to the 'Dance Queens' of Egyptian belly dance such as Samya Gamel, Naima Akef and, as I'm attemping to portray above, Taheya Karaoke. Not sure if I'll be dancing to the band for the Chequer Mead show, but it's a complimentary contrast to the pharonic style representing the ancient and infamous Queens of Egypt in the 1st half.
If I've tempted you to come along then I would suggest that you buy you ticket now as I have a feeling it's going to be a popular show!

Majma

Returned Sunday, exhausted, from a full on weekend of dance at the Majma Festival. Have to say that the organiser, Raheesha, is such a warm and welcoming lady who sucessfully produced the best dance festival I've been to in recent years. The workshops and shows were packed and everyone seemed to really enjoy the event.
My weekend started after a long journey from Sussex with Lianna as my excellent and entertaining travelling companion. We just about made the beginning of what proved to be a fantastic Friday night show. Favourites for me were Raheesha performing a beautiful hula dance, Anurekha Ghosh, an awesome kahtak dancer, Katie Holland and her girls performing some funky bollywood,Valerie Romanin who specialises in 'barefoot flamenco', and Samantha Emanuel, a tribal fusion dancer with amazing interpretations. On the downside, I felt it would be an impossibility to follow such incredible dancing on the Saturday show when I was due to perform as part of the Ramzy dance Company- I was suddenly very depressed!
However, I felt the Ramzy girls stepped up to the mark and gave excellent performances, most of which was improvised. Lianna and I performed our duet really well and I enjoyed the experience. Once I was on stage, I didn't feel at all nervous as I thought I would and we got some lovely compliments the next day from various fellow event goers.
Hossam and Serena knocked everyones socks off as usual, and the band played the best I've ever heard them, (Bashir the nay player was particularly sensational.)
Best of all, I got to hang out with the girls and enjoy some much needed unwind time over a couple of glasses of rose!

Dance Queens Of The Nile

Even after a well earned lie in, my mucles are still aching from yesterdays performance at the Bloomsbury Theatre in London. We (the Ramzy Dance Company) have worked so hard practising and perparing for the show over the last few months-even years for some of the dances. The last week was particularly hectic and busy with last minute touches to costumes, makeup, fine tuning performances and lots of rehearsals. In particular, Serena has amazed me by turning her hand to doing just about anything! She is simply super human!!!
For me, I would love to do it again as I always think the second time is usually the better performance. By the last dance of the first half, I was running on fumes!
Overall, I think it went very well, especially with some outstanding performances from Rachel, Karima, Helen and Serena. We are also lucky to have with us the impressive Sabrina, Maria, Rita (all the way from Portugal!!!) and Amy who gave their all and some, (Sabrina was a whizz back stage and demon on the road home!) The lovely Cherie was absolutely stunning in the Flamenco fusion.
I was also lucky enough to perform a duet with my beautiful and very talented friend Lianna, accompanied by the band, which was very cool. Initially, I wasn't convinced it went well for me but I'm assured it was good.
Can't go without mentioning my friends and fellow Uska Daraians Ann, Caroline and Verity-they were brilliant back stage and it was lovely to have friendly faces to help calm the nerves!
It would be a real treat to take the show on the road and perform for others around the UK and beyond. There are plans afoot but we will have to wait and see!

Practise Makes Perfect

Rehearsals are really hotting up for the Dance Queens of the Nile show at the Bloomsbury Theatre on the 5th of February. Everyone is putting in hours and hours of practise, travelling from a fair distance for regular Company rehearsals. It seems a lot of work for just a few moments of dancing, but all the hard work is paying off and actually, I enjoy the practise and preparation as much as the end result. How can being part of such a creative process not be rewarding? It's well worth the effort and if you don't believe me, you'll just have to come and see the show for yourself!
In the meantime, I was lucky enough to find myself dancing at the Dorchester, Mayfair last week-what a way to kick start the year!! I think I felt more nervous just walking through the door of the Dorchester than the actual performance? However, it was such good fun and the people where all really lovely, being very kind with their complements. Not sure such gigs will become a regular event unfortunately, but it's another great experience that can't be sniffed at!

Another year has flown by and I really don't know how I got through 2010 so quickly!? My theory is that I've been so busy I just hadn't noticed the days passing. Can't grumbled as it's been busy in a positive and productive way for the most part. If I had to choose a highlight I'd have to say dancing to the live orchestra back in May and September tops the lot. On a personal note, I enjoyed an amazing trip to the stunningly beautiful New Zealand back in Feb- I've never felt so refreshed and energised despite the 22 hour journey!

This year may prove to be even busier with the very grand Dance Queens Of The Nile show at the Bloomsbury Theatre in London on the 5th of February, to kick off the new year. The show will feature unseen choreographies by Serena and Hossam Ramzy, the Hossam Ramzy Orchestra, special guest dancers and the Ramzy Dance Company- including me! The following month I'll be joining the Ramzy Dance Company to perform at the Majma Festival in Glastonbury where Hossam and Serena are the featured artists of the Saturday night Show. The festival is run over the weekend of the 5th-7th of March and includes workshops and performances from some top teachers and dancers.

On April 2nd, our local show 'Shimmy Shimmy' is back on for the 6th year(I think!?) Last year proved the most successful with many people travelling a fair distance to watch and perform.
So, a busy start for the dancing and I can never be sure of what else might crop up in between? (didn't anticipate Derby, Essex, Crowborough, Planet Egypt and many other bonus gigs last year- so you never know!!?)

Paparazzi? (Well, Nafoura Magazine At Least!)

Well, the Ramzy Dance Company got a mention in this months edition of Nafoura magazine which also includes some cool photos of the gang (not quite sure what Lianna and I are looking at? Answers on a postcard please!) as well as Serena working the front cover! There is also a substantial interview with Hossam and Serena about music, dance and future plans-well worth a read.
Also this month, the Company performed a doozy of a choreography at a private gig- a debut for a very special piece but certainly not it's one and only outing. It's completely different from anything else we do either as a group or individually and I love it! In the meantime, we're all still practising like mad and pulling a mean show together!

Planet Egypt

Here's the lowdown- Planet Egypt, I think, went very well for the Ramzy Dance Company as a whole. Hossam and Serena certainly made a positive impression on an eager audience and I know they acquired a number of new fans. Serena danced like a demon- she rocked! As for the girls-magical!!! I know Cherie in particular was in her element and loved every minute of it. The drumming took alot of people by surprise and I hope the audience enjoyed it. For my own performance, I put in as much as I had and it was ok.
Planet Egypt is a very cool place where you can watch and perform belly dance and then some! (Valerie Romanin put in a blinding turn of her own unique, flamenco style and the lovely Raheesha impressed with both Morrocan and gypsy flavours- hark at me, I should be a writing for the Sunday papers?!)

Crowborough, Majma and More!

What a whirlwind week! My classes started on Monday with an enthusiastic group of new students. Not only were they super keen, but they picked up the movements really quickly and went away with big smiles on their faces- the best kind of first class I could have hoped for.
My lovely Wednesday class were equally rareing to get going and, maybe it was the long break, but I made them work really hard! They rose to the challenge brilliantly and it was very clear they'd been practising over the summer hols- makes me very proud. Don't know whether they'll be pleased to hear that the upbeat pace will continue? I've started as I mean to go on!
Also this week, the Ramzy company met for practise. All the girls are putting in extra practise for a very special event I'm not yet at liberty to divulge, but it's something we've been working towards for some time and all feel very passionate about-hopefully details will follow soon.
We're also practising ahead of a performance at Planet Egypt on the 30th of September. This will be to promote the MAJMA festival at which Hossam, Serena and the girls (including me, hooray!) will be performing. I've never been to Majma and am looking forward to it. In fact, it's been a while since I've been to any such dance festval, ('Bodies and Beats' being a few years ago now.)
Finally, on Friday I was a very lucky lady and got to perform with Hossam and his fantastic band at the Crowborough Arts Festival. The musicians, despite some technical sound problems, played beautifully. I know that they have played for some of the best dancers in the world and, as I said, feel a very lucky lady. I think my dance went well and I got lots of positive feedback from the audience (thank you :)) Ok, so a lot of them were my own students! But still, it's a very different feeling with the musicians playing. It brings out another element altogether in the dancing, but if I try to explain it in more detail I will probably just end up sounding like some tree hugging hippy?! So it short- It was brilliant fun!!!

Fun and Games

Well, it's been a very busy couple of weeks and I feel absolutely shattered! Confession- I haven't danced or drummed for nearly a week and a half and that's a long time out of my normal schedule. I needed the time to just enjoy hanging out with my boys and family, (very proudly watched my middle brother graduate, entertained my young nephews and rocked out to the 'Prodigy' to name a few things.)
I also got the chance to see my good friend Lianna perform at Planet Egypt- so not completely dance free!? She was, of course, sensational and I enjoyed the night out more so as I'd never been to Planet Egypt before. A very upbeat atmosphere hosted by the delightful and charismatic Anne White, who ensured her guests and performers were well looked after and entertained. Also performing was the lovely Janet from Nottingham. I've only met her briefly at Derby a few months back, but she is a very memorable character and her dancing just brings ot the biggest grin in me! Actually, it was amazing the number of faces I recogonised as I really don't get out and about on 'the scene' much at all.
As for my own dancing, I got the chance to perform in Essex a couple of weeks ago. Despite a costume and music malfunction (although the costume was fine by the time I got on stage) it was another really lovely audience who fully appreciated the dancing and drumming, particulary from Hossam and Serena of course! I hope that won't be the last time we perform for the Essex dancers, especially as they are some of the most hospitaple people I've ever met (many thanks Jayne!)

End of Term

As ever, this time of the year always proves to be the busiest for both my dancing and my day job. I'm not complaining- I prefer busy and am enjoying all the activities and performance opportunities as I know it will calm down considerably once August kicks in. Until then I've got/had a few of my own performances to present, students to prepare for their end of year show, taster sessions to deliver as well as school plays, trips and end of term events during the week to help organise and support.
Had a great time with students participating in the local Lewes carnival recently. Not really performing as such (just keeping balance on the truck is a skill in its self!) but promoting ourselves and the dance as well as supporting a popular local event. The turnout was a little less than past years (weather wasn't as kind) which affected the atmosphere a touch, but it's usually really good fun and well recieved by the general public.
Later, my students Ann and George organised a brilliant Hafla at the local coffee shop and we had such a nice time just dancing and giving impromtu performances when it took our fancy! They are already perparing a second event for the autumn so watch this space.
The following week, Lianna and Chloe put on an equally brilliant 'Grand Harem' day- a little more formal with performances and shopping on the menu. I got to try out 'The Black Opal' choreography Serena taught at Reading. (still a little rough around the edges but I'm working on it!)
My focus now is on the Essex show with Hossam and Serena on the 17th of July where hopefully I'll get to dance a solo piece and also get groovy with the tabla, (which I'm almost looking more forward to than the dancing?!)
Also, my students will be performing at a student showcase on the 14th of July at UCTC. They've worked particularly hard this year and have impressed me with organising their own events, performing their own choreographies and participating in performances outside of the class environment- makes me very proud!

Practise, practise , practise....

Got a sneaky peak at the footage from the Reading show and it looks really good! There are still things I know I can improve on- always is- but I feel very motivated and can't wait until the next event. So presently it's practise, practise, practise every day on Company pieces, solo dances and new choreographies I'm working on.
Also, I'm working particulary hard on my drumming. Hossam has given me a few things to work on and develop and at first, it's very slow and steady with a few 'colourful' words thrown in for good measure when things don't quite go to plan! Still, there's no way around steady, constant and regular practise, even if it starts to become the most monotonous mind numbing exercise! I'm always trying to run before I can walk with the tabla and now I've seen and heard the riq played live, ('awesome' is the word), I want to learn that as well!!!

I've never been tempted to put out videos of myself dancing and join the youtube generation. However, last week fellow company dancer Helen decided it was about time we (the Ramzy Dance Company) had our own youtube channel.
First uploads include our performances at the recent Derby show. Ironically, at the time none of us were particularly happy about our performances but they actually don't look at all bad. All I can say is the music is a bit out of sync with the dancing (honest!!!) Helen is still working on correcting this so if you fancy taking a peek, please bare that in mind!

Lumps For Legs!

I don't have legs today- just two leg shaped lumps of concrete! After months of preparation and practise, the Reading showed proved to be a big hit with everyone working really hard and playing their part brilliantly.
The weekend started with another fantastic workshop with Hossam and Serena to 'The Black Pearl' from the 'Ruby' album- one of my favourite tracks and choreographies but one you can't approach half heartedly. Not surprisingly, by the end of the afternoon my energy levels were already running low. On one hand that meant less energy to waste feeling nervous about performing! Luckily, I'd spent the night before at Rachel's house and had a handy pillow to rest up for just a few minutes-made a big difference just to stretch out and rest my back and eyes.
Later, the girls excitedly prepared for the first choreography. We've become a tight team and kept proceedings lighthearted but, at the same time, focused. As always, before we knew it the bedouin tribal was over and we we're racing to complete the change for the second dance in a super fast 4 mins! (we made sure to practise the changeover before hand!!)
I was quite nervous about dancing to the live band but Hossam and Serena had some encouraging words for us all and as soon as the music started, the nerves went and I loved every second! The band were just superb and if you ever get the chance, you should come and hear them play live. It was a unique experience and I now understand why dancers rave about dancing to live music-really is the best! There are always elements of my own dancing to self critique and last night was no exception, but I can't knock such a fantastic experience and hope it won't be my last.
It was lovely, as ever, to look out and see lots of smiling and familiar faces. I've said it before and it may seem obvious, but without an appreciative audience the whole affair is flat and feels pointless. It was particularly brilliant to see my students in the audience-they drove a long way the see the show and I can't wait for class to see what they thought? I'm sure they enjoyed the show as a rare treat on the belly dance scene: the best live Egyptian music, dancing and dancers who can also drum!

Derby Show

Just back from a performing at a very cool show in Derby, organised by Diana Mahira- a really lovely lady who very kindly allowed the Ramzy gang to crash at her house, snoring and all!! Helen, Rachel, Cherie and I all performed a solo each to a very friendly audience. We really enjoyed the show and appreciated the warm and smiling faces- absolutely made the many hours travel from East Sussex well worth it!
The icing on the cake was to perform a drumming piece with Hossam and Serena- our public debut as a drumming band and something we've been itching to show people for some time. We kept a steady beat on accompanying duffs and tabla while Hossam rocked the rhythms and Serena caught every 'dom', 'tak' and shimmy effortlessly. V V V V V V cool!!!!!! Should prove to be a great warm up for the Reading show with only 1 week to go. Just need to make final decision on solo costume then practise, practise, practise!!

Reading-nearly there!!

Just completed a tiring but productive weekend of practise with the Ramzy Dance Company. We're really gearing up for the Reading Concert as it will be our official debut as a dance company and less than 2 weeks away! It's going to be a knock out show- can't wait!!! Until then, some of us are heading up to Derby to perform some solo pieces next weekend. It's a real bonus for us to be able to perform just ahead of Reading. It's alot to sqeeze in, (with practises and preparations almost everyday) but I would have been mad to say no!

Wow- What a Show!!

I know last night's 'Shimmy Shimmy' was co-organised by myself and the Uska Dara troupe, but we had a brilliant time and the best fun I've ever had at one of our own shows. The dancing was through the roof with amazing performances across the board. I particularly have to say the dances of my fellow Uska buddies and the Ramzy Dance company girls made my evening, but I thought everyone put in fantastic performances. My favourite bit was dancing with the Ramzy girls- it's a rare treat but something that's becoming more common, especially with the advent of the Reading show. I also really enjoyed performing my own drum solo- silly to say I wasn't sure I would as it's a style I usually shy away from. I guess that's the point though- it's not a dance style I can possibly be shy about! Could this be the start of a whole new side to my dancing!?
There are probably still a few technical and logistical bits and pieces to tweak and fine tune within the show overall as this year saw us at a new and untried venue, but the Uska Dara girls should be very proud of their efforts and will certainly be back next year with an equally great show as this year's will be very hard to top!

'Shimmy Shimmy'

Just a week away now from the 6th annual Uska Dara Hafla and show, this year being held at the Civic Centre in Uckfield. Tickets really are running out fast- we've built up a loyal and enthusiatic base of both audience and dancers over the years, (1st year was a bit dodgy for numbers?!) One of the reasons why we moved venue- to allow more people in. Also, the new venue should mean an easier time of setting up and clearing away at the end of the evening, meaning more time to just enjoy the dancing and party! I have a couple of new costumes to air and a change from my ususal of style for my routine, but should be all good fun!!!

Cover Girl

Not quite!!! Spent Saturday evening modelling some gorgeous outfits for Maayan of Brighton Orient, ahead of the launch for her new website.
It was great to be invited along, being a very new experience for me. Probably modelled about 6 or so outfits during the evening, each one more tempting than the next- (if I had the money, could have spent thousands!)
It was excellent fun dressing up and posing- I felt very glamourous, but not sure how the finished photos will turn out!? Soon as Maayan's store is up and running, I'll post a link as I'm sure it will be well worth browsing!

Company Performance

Just danced, for the 2nd time, as part of the Ramzy Dance Company and feel very exhausted but really pleased and with our performance. The audience absolutely loved the routine and gave us a very loud and long standing ovation! Hopefully that won't be the last time we dance for them or dance that particular number.
I'm incredibly proud to be a part of the Company, along with some of the best dancers and individuals I've come to know. We love performing as a group and get really excited about the dancing, having so much fun along the way that it's surprising we have energy left for the routine?!
Also, it's very cool, of course, to dance with Serena who is not only a superb dancer, but is the loveliest lady, (and someone who knows how to party!)
Lets hope it's not to long until the next Company outing?

It may be a picturesque winter wonderland start to the new year but with so much to look forward to, I can't wait for the snow to melt! For starters, there are some great workshops on offer. I'm booked in for the Drumzy London workshops in March, plus Hossam and Serena have plenty of other gigs going on around the country and beyond, (including some fab shows to look forward to- Reading on May- don't miss out!!!) Finally, I'm looking forward to getting back to my classes and to my students- it's been a long break and I'm itching to start teaching their new routine!
Just starting to get properly organised with my group's and my own show on April the 17th in Uckfield, East Sussex. Should be something a bit special as my fellow Drumzy troupe members have very kindly agreed to dance including Helen, Rachel, Cherie and Lianna. I'm very excited about the show with one small drawback- I just can't decide what to dance?!
Until the snow passes, I can safely say that 2009 was an very enjoyable year, but I have a feeling 2010 is going to be just a bit more exciting!

Saqarah

Finally got to dance at Saqarah last night and had as much fun on stage as off. Not sure my dance went exactly to plan but I had a really brilliant night out all the same. Trouble was, the level of dancing was outstanding and I couldn't wait to get back out in the audience to watch the rest of the show, including my good friend and fellow Ramzy troupe member, Rachel-looking gorgeous and effortless as ever! Everyone I met was so lovely- no airs or divas, just love of dancing. Definately a place worth many repeat visits in the future.

London Workshop

No idea how I kept going this weekend with 2 full days of dance workshops run by Serena and Hossam Ramzy, plus partying the night away to celebrate the recent marriage of my ever optomistic and lovely friend, student and fellow troupe member, Verity and 'Mr Verity', Simon.
Actually, I do know because when you hang around people who have a real lust for life and such enthusiasm for the things they are passionate about, it tends to rub off and energise those around them!
The workshops were brilliant as ever- I'm never disappointed when I attend one of Hossam and Serena's workshops because they are always able to sucessfully combine a stunning choreography with beautiful music, help dancers to understand and interpret the music they are dancing to but continue to keep the atmosphere fun and welcoming. Sounds a bit like I'm getting some kind of commission here!? Honestly though, it's time and money well spent and I know, by the familiar faces I see at their events that others agree!

Egyptian Nights II

It's taken a few days to recover from Lianna's fabulous and highly sucessful 'Egyptian Nights II' show. I think the dancing was very well recieved and Lianna herself was on top form and absolutely stunning, as were all the Zaphira girls. I was lucky enough to watch most of the show up front but, as always, missed a few highlights as I prepared for my own performance, which I thought went 'ok' but I'm looking forward to watching the re-run on DVD!
Still, it was good prep for Saqarah on the 14th of Novemember, which I'm really excited about it!
Should be a another great show including performances from the amazing and beautiful Rachel, a fellow Drumzy and 'Dance Queens' troupe member- a real treat!

Finally, I am very pleased to announce that I have passed the Drumzy Advanced Dancers Course after 2 challenging, but rewarding years of hard work and study! It has been such a turning point for my dancing and teaching skills- I would easily recommend the course to anyone who is serious about taking their dancing and performing to a completely different level. Not only that, but I learnt to play the Tabla, and well enough to perform with Hossam and the girls from the Drumzy Troupe! (an amazing and exciting evening with Hossam, Serena and the girls- blog post to follow!)
Absolutely no regrets about enroling and being a part of the course, although it was something I thought very hard and sincerely about to begin with. I am very proud to be included amoung the very first graduates of the Drumzy Advanced Dancers Course.

Big night out!

I had a a fantastic time at Saqarah last night, a monthly bellydance hafla and showcase based in London, along with fellow 'Uska Darites' Ann, Caroline and Debbie.
We were treated to some beautiful and inspiring routines in an enthusiastic and welcoming atmosphere, both from keen amateurs and top professionals. We even got a free bag and a slice of cake! (not something offered on a regular basis, I gather- Saqarah were celebrating 2 years of successful showcases.)
What I really enjoyed last night was being a member of the audience. I love dancing and performing but I also like to just sit back and enjoy great entertainment and I wasn't dissappointed at Saqarah.
I will definately be returning in the future as both a punter and a performer-It was my first visit to Saqarah but it will certainly not be my last!

Rotherfield Hafla

Wow-what a week! The first ever Rotherfield Hafla, themed to the amazing music of Hossam Ramzy, has been a huge success, running smoothly from start to finish; a big hit with an enthusiatic and appreciative audience including very special guests, Hossam and Serena Ramzy.

The choreographies performed were outstanding, being treated to some incredible solos from the sensational Phoenix-Sahar, fellow student and up and coming star, Lianna 'Chicky' Greene and my teacher, mentor and inspiration, Serena. All the dancers involved made the evening extra special with their wonderful routines, obviously having put a great deal of effort and practise into the choreographies.
As ever, my original teacher Joyce was present in support, this time doing a briiliant job as MC and beaming away, making performing much less nerve wracking for everyone, particularly for me!

Finally, El Hanim, (the Rotherfield Group), ended the show with a spectacular Saidi stick dance (another fantastic choreography by Serena and my favourite to dance), a great way to end an outstanding evening of entertainment- roll on next year!

Only a few short weeks now until the Rotherfield Hafla - everyone is working really hard to perfect and polish their routines, (some have just finished learning them- eek!) Still, plenty of time to put the finishing touches to what should be a very cool show boasting the amazing Serena Ramzy as our very special guest dancer. Of course, there are a few nerves beginning to surface -only natural- but also lots of excitment!
I'll be dancing with both my group, Uska Dara, and Serena's local group, El Hanim who are hosting the evening. I'm really looking forward to all the routines, all choregraphed to the fabulous music of Hossam Ramzy (Mr Serena!), but particularly a Saidi piece- we get to be groovy with sticks!!!
